The Top Album of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Top Place.

At first glance, this album may look closer to a difficult university quiz than a new pop record by an artist who just had a previous single featured an international K-pop icon. Broken across four separate movements and sung in thirteen languages, it is a head-spinning classical-tinged work investigating female mystique, spiritual ascent, and physical change, frequently by way of the prism of different women saints. The end of a relationship—a topic handled with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is launched heavenward on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a major orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within a vast roll call of collaborators. Its sheer ambition by itself renders the efforts of contemporary pop stars appear quite laughable.

Transcending Academic Pretense

The fact that Lux succeeds in transcend overly academic posturing is nothing short of miraculous, with complete credit going to Rosalía. Although this is not her first album to blend the past and modern styles, its ambitions feel far higher on Lux, with the balancing act more precarious. The element that really elevates this fourth release, beyond its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and inherent theatricality, proves to be a core spirit of joy. Much like the iconic artist at her peak, you find a wondrous sense to the vocalist's voice that pulls you up in its tornado. When she's tearing hearts apart, you still want to stay right there through the ride.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

This playful spirit comes forth clearly during the stunning Italian song about a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool over several moments. Then, everything drops away, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes in like comedic force. The song then segues to the wild track featuring racing orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The charm with this album is that you never quite know—nor want to know—where you will go next."

Nearly every song concludes at a totally different place from how it started. A track explores the fleeting nature of fame with a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating into electronic cacophony. Another, a song that recalls the artist's earlier rhythmic style begins out dark and sinister, featuring prowling beats, until sudden flamenco handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to soften its jagged edges.

The Bridge Of Experiment & Pop

A key achievement of the album involves navigating the line of radical experimentation and broad appeal. This is no coincidence that the album has achieved the artist's first release to break into the upper reaches of major markets: at its core a suite of truly catchy pop songs. A song performed primarily in the English language builds around a refrain that seems to collect increasingly nagging melodies while it spins upward. That trick gets echoed on another expansive track that expands and constricts, intertwining layered melodies as an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number seduces with its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it shares the cultural honesty of other heartbreak songs, eviscerating an ex- lover labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals have a painted-on smile, akin to a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You've the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist scale, an ambitious reach for capital-A artistry amid of impending artificial sameness. It eschews solipsism in favor of glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its own built-in excess. This is a deep well of hidden gems that takes patience to fully mine but doesn't feels like a chore. While other big pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, this record is a sumptuous banquet where the characters at the table, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flit between discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from music's most endlessly inventive practitioner.
