Seven accused members of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
